If you airbrush for the first time or your are just starting to learn to airbrush, you should first try out to paint with the airbrus a little bit. You will quickly get a feeling for the handling of the airbrush and soon the handling will become very intuitive. The right handling of an airbrush with a double action function has been described above. To learn to paint with the airbrush it's not enough to know the right handling. It also requires the right technic.
Prepare your paint. Using the airbrush bowls or jars from your set, mix your acrylic paint with a little bit of water, such that it has an inky consistency. (If you're using inks, you generally won't need to dilute them.) Remember, you can always add more water but you can't take it back out - add only a few drops at a time. Developing the right consistency can take practice. Adjust the needle cap on the airbrush so that the needle does not quite touch the cap, leaving just enough room for air to escape. Try spraying your paint on scratch paper to check the consistency, and practice using the lever and button on your airbrush.
Hold the tip of your airbrush several inches back from the left hand side of the paper. Start moving your airbrush right across the page and lightly apply color as you go. With the air still on, go back to the left side of the page and start all over again. Your goal is to cover the entire page in a nice, even shade/tone with no signs of starting or stopping.
The nice thing about the airbrush is that the paint comes out so subtly and so controlled that you can use the picture as described as reference, then hold the airbrush as though it was the light, the high points on the models will catch the paint, and automatically do some of the highlighting. For the shading, the model is turned upside down and treated much the same way using the above-described photo as reference.
This is the goal, the reward for learning to airbrush. I’ve purchased a number of things that have been waiting years for an airbrush. The most recent was the Falcon and it is my desire to paint it more than anything else that finally got the ball rolling to start airbrushing. Find something that can only be painted with an airbrush, assemble and prep it and let it hang over your head as a combination carrot and stick to get you motivated.
